Looking for something to do that everyone will enjoy? There’s heaps of family fun to be had around Yeppoon and Rockhampton.

Let the kids be entertained while you sit and relax on a deck overlooking the ocean with a cocktail. Right on Yeppoon Main Beach is Keppel Bay Sailing Club with the idylic Keppel Islands as the backdrop.

Get up and close with the animals at Cooberrie Park Wildlife Sanctuary. Say hello to the Dingoes – Dino and Diva, the Rufous Bettong – Ollie and Candy the Koala. Be sure to catch their animal encounter at 1 pm. Pack up the kids and pack a picnic lunch and have a great day that will have the kids running around with excitement.
You’re sure to score a goal when you take the kids to Rockhampton Botanic Gardens and Zoo. With open grassed areas to kick a ball, a playground to swing in, gardens to explore and animals to see at the Zoo. Enjoy a bite to eat at the Gardens Tearooms making it an easy family day out. The café is located under the 100-year-old Banyan Fig Trees. After lunch join the Zoo Keepers as they feed the animals. Have you seen baby Capri? She’s adorable! Awe at the heaviest bird in Australia, the Cassowary and the near-threatened Southern hairy-nosed wombat.
Spend the day (or even longer) at Great Keppel Island. There’s something for the whole family from exploring the fringing reefs, having a friendly game of beach cricket, waddling in the ocean, hiking to the lookout or just simply relaxing, what a great way to spend the day. Pack a picnic or grab a bite to eat on the island at Great Keppel Island Hideaway.
It’s a popular spot for families. The calm waters of this island paradise are very safe (even for young children). If your kids have outgrown sandcastles, then you can enjoy paddleboards, kayaks and SUPs.
Nestled in the dry rainforest is this hidden natural attraction. You’ll be amazed by the interesting facts of the caves. Look closely and you’ll see a very rare and special fern growing in the caves and the tiniest cutest bats in December and January. You’ll even see where the summer solstice takes place which the only natural place this occurs in December and January. There’s so much to discover at the Capricorn Caves, this makes a great family day out even the grandparents would love it! Who doesn’t like Devonshire teas and a hot cuppa or dig into a burger? Or make a splash in the pool on those hot days to cool off.
Chasing a thrill? There’s some serious fun that the whole family will enjoy at Rocky Bowl and Leisure. Get a hole in one with indoor glow in the dark mini golf, mission accepted with laser tag, test your driving skills in the bumper cars, arcade games, a pool table and of course 10 pin bowling! After working up an appetite grab a snack and a cool drink from the café. Head to Rocky Bowl and Leisure for some family fun and good times!
A short 40 minute drive from Rockhampton takes you to Mt Hay Gemstone Tourist Park. This is a wonderful place for families to try their hand at fossicking and learn the wonders of the ‘Thunder Egg’.
Thunder eggs or ‘volcanic birthstones’ are crystalline formations that occur when gas bubbles in molten lava solidify on cooling. They look like normal rocks but once cut in half they reveal beautiful patterns of semi-precious minerals inside that can be made up of quartz, amethyst, agate and jasper.
