Keppel Bay Fishing Adventures
Keppel Bay is one of Queensland’s ultimate tourist destinations, but it’s also a local fishing hotspot. The white sandy beaches are just a bonus.
This fishing journey takes you from Yeppoon to Pumpkin Island in The Keppel Bay where you can chase reef fish, spanish mackerel and trevally. The first leg of the trip takes you to Bluff Rock (locally known as Iron Pot) where you can troll just 10 minutes from the marina.
Trolling is the favoured fishing method in The Keppel Bay area, but bait fishing is great for reef fish. June to September is the best time for mackerel. Since the introduction of the Net Free Fishing Zone, the school mackerel are beginning to return to The Keppel Bay as well.
If you’re planning a day out fishing this area, always check the weather first. Anything over 15 knots isn’t fishable and there are off shore conditions to consider such as tides and currents.
You’re not guaranteed to catch a fish following this trail alone. Great fishermen know that you should also do your own research beforehand.
Bring your family along and while they spend their day on their own little beach, do some serious guilt-free fishing!
