You could drive it in an hour without stopping, but exploring one of Australia’s most scenic coastal road-trip routes should not be rushed. The 100km stretch of Queensland’s Capricorn Coast hugs the shores of Keppel Bay, meandering through the towns of Emu Park, Rosslyn Bay – the jumping-off point to southern Great Barrier Reef islands – and Yeppoon, before cruising into Byfield National Park and back through the Beef Capital of Rockhampton. Along the way, there is plenty to discover: think crocodile farms, animal sanctuaries, ancient cave systems, hidden beaches, farm gates, and coral reefs.
Starting around 665km north of Brisbane and 45km north-east of Rockhampton, this coastal journey begins in the charming seaside village of Emu Park, right on the Tropic of Capricorn.

Emu Park
Overlooking Great Keppel Island from the headland south of Emu Park’s main beach, the striking Singing Ship sculpture stands tall, catching the sea breeze and filling the air with its haunting song. This tribute to seafarer’s honours Captain James Cook, who named Keppel Bay in 1770.
Below the Singing Ship, take a stroll along the coastal boardwalk leading to the Centenary of ANZAC Memorial Walk, where art installations commemorate Gallipoli, and a gatehouse honours the soldiers who served in World War I. Don’t miss the beautifully painted Main Beach Bathing Pavilion, which depicts vintage beach bathing scenes, or pop by the Emu Park post office for some vibrant street art.

Rosslyn Bay & Keppel Bay Marina
Rosslyn Bay is your departure point for boat trips to the nearby islands and their surrounding reefs. The most famous of the 27 islands in the southern Great Barrier Reef Marine Reserve is Great Keppel Island, located just 14km offshore. This tropical paradise boasts 17 beaches, excellent snorkelling and diving opportunities, bushwalks, and a variety of accommodations to suit all budgets.
Catch a ferry from the marina with Keppel Konnections, and soon enough, you’ll be on Great Keppel Island, ready to unwind. Great Keppel Island Hideaway offers comfortable cabins, a bar, and plenty of outdoor activities. Take a sightseeing boat tour with Funtastic Cruises to snorkel with turtles in clear waters or explore secluded beaches with Freedom Fast Cats, which offers glass-bottomed boat tours and a thrilling boom-netting experience.
For a truly private escape, head to Pumpkin Island, located about 10km north of Great Keppel, where you can stay in a stylish cabin or even rent the whole island for an exclusive getaway.

Yeppoon
Next, the bustling town of Yeppoon offers a sophisticated yet laid-back coastal escape, with trendy restaurants, boutique accommodations, and a friendly beach-town atmosphere.
Street art fans will appreciate the colorful murals scattered across the town, especially around Yeppoon Lagoon, where you’ll find vibrant art like pink turtles, and the nearby skate park. While there, take a dip in the lagoon, a popular family-friendly spot with water fountains, a water park, play areas, and beautiful sunset views over the islands.
Head to Keppel Bay Sailing Club, where murals of coastal life – think sailboats, Kombi vans, and paddleboarders – set the mood. If you’re a food lover, follow the Taste Capricorn Coast food trail to explore local markets, farm gates, and fresh regional produce.
Beach lovers are spoiled for choice with Yeppoon Main Beach, Lammermoor Beach, and Kinka Beach nearby. For a bit of adventure, take the Bluff Point Track from Kemp Beach to Turtle Lookout for panoramic views or, if you’re visiting between May and October, whale-watch from this prime spot. The 17km stretch of pristine sand at Farnborough Beach, accessible by 4WD, is a must for those seeking more solitude.

Byfield
Nestled on the edge of Byfield National Park, Byfield is a haven for artists, nature lovers, and those seeking a peaceful escape. Stop by a local café or stay at the charming Castle Rock Farm or Ferns Hideaway Resort for a tranquil experience.
A visit to Nob Creek Pottery is a must for art enthusiasts. Run by potter Steve Bishopric and ceramic artist Sue McBurnie, this working studio offers a unique opportunity to see the rare Byfield Fern, which features in many of their ceramic works.
In Byfield National Park, you’ll find freshwater creeks and cool waterholes perfect for a refreshing dip. Take the 4.3km Stony Creek rainforest circuit or enjoy the Water Park Creek boardwalk, a favorite for day-trippers. Byfield’s secluded beaches also offer great fishing, and for experienced 4WD enthusiasts, the northern part of the national park features dramatic sand dunes and rugged terrain to explore.
